Class 10 boards reward preparation that is boring and consistent. There's no clever shortcut, but there is a meaningful difference between revising well and revising a lot. This is a practical plan you can adapt to CBSE, ICSE or a state board.
Start from the syllabus document, not the textbook
Download your board's official syllabus and mark every topic as one of three things: confident, shaky, not started. Most students discover the list of genuinely weak topics is far shorter than the anxiety suggests — usually eight to twelve across all subjects.
That list is your plan. Everything else is maintenance.
The rule that matters most: past papers early
The single most common preparation mistake is saving past papers for the last month "once I've revised everything". Do them from the start, even badly.
Past papers tell you the question style, which topics carry weight, and — most valuably — where you lose marks to presentation rather than knowledge. That's information you want in month one, not week forty.
Subject by subject
Mathematics
Maths is practice, not reading. Watching worked solutions creates a false sense of competence that collapses in the exam hall.
- Do problems with a closed book, then check
- Keep a mistakes notebook — one line per error and why. Revise the notebook, not the chapter
- Prioritise the high-weight chapters your syllabus flags
Persistent difficulty in maths usually traces to a gap from Class 8 or 9, not the current chapter. That's the case where an hour with a maths tutor is worth more than ten hours of self-study, because you need someone to find the gap.
Science
Treat the three parts differently:
- Physics is numerical practice plus a small set of derivations. Same approach as maths.
- Chemistry splits into memory-heavy (reactions, properties) and understanding-heavy (bonding, mole concept). Use flashcards for one, worked problems for the other.
- Biology is largely terminology and diagrams. Practise drawing and labelling; diagram marks are among the easiest available.
Social Science
The volume feels large because it's fragmented. Chunk it: dates and events in one pass, causes and consequences in another. Answer structure earns marks here — examiners look for a defined shape, not a well-written essay.
Languages
The most neglected subject and the easiest place to gain marks, because the format is predictable. Practise the writing formats — letter, notice, article — until they're automatic. Grammar sections are pure pattern recognition; a week of focused practice moves the score.
A three-month shape
Month 1 — audit. Complete the syllabus mapping. Do one past paper per subject, untimed, to find real weaknesses. Start the mistakes notebook.
Month 2 — repair. Work only on the shaky list. This is where tutoring pays: targeted sessions on specific topics rather than general coverage. Keep one past paper a week.
Month 3 — rehearsal. Full papers, timed, in the morning slot your exam falls in. Revise only the mistakes notebook and formula sheets. Do not start new material.
Things that quietly cost marks
- Handwriting and layout. Examiners mark quickly. Underline key terms, number your answers, keep diagrams clean.
- Question selection order. Answer what you know first. Marks lost to time on question one are unrecoverable.
- Not reading the mark allocation. A 3-mark question wants three points. A 5-mark question wants structure.
- Sleep. Two weeks of five-hour nights costs more marks than the extra hours gain.
When tutoring is worth it
Not for coverage — school and textbooks handle that. It's worth it for:
- A specific topic that hasn't landed after two honest attempts
- Diagnosing why maths or physics "doesn't make sense" generally
- Reviewing your written answers against what examiners actually reward
